Lessons with the Miami Valley Pipes and Drums
LESSONS WITH THE MIAMI VALLEY PIPES AND DRUMS
Lessons for beginning bagpipe students are private, one-on-one, 30 minute lessons. We usually have a waiting list, so if you're interested in playing the bagpipes, it's a good idea to get on the waiting list as soon as possible. It is best that new students already know how to read music, so if reading music is new to you, it wouldn't hurt to start learning! (Pipe music is all on the treble clef.)
Our lessons are free, with the understanding that the students will commit to playing with the band when they're ready. Lessons are held every Tuesday afternoon and evening at Sugar Creek Presbyterian Church, 4417 Bigger Road, Kettering, Ohio, with the exception of the first Tuesday of each month.
Beginning students start by playing the practice chanter, pictured below. Most students are on the practice chanter for about a year before making the transition to the full bagpipe. Contact the instructor for recommendations on practice chanters and to find out which beginning tutor book to purchase.
We're always looking for drummers, too. Pipe band snare drumming technique is very different from other forms of drumming, so some instruction will be required even if you already know how to play. In addition to snares, the pipe band also utilizes tenor drums and bass drum.
